Ed DeAngelis, CEO of EDA Contractors, Featured on PHL17 Morning Show

Ed DeAngelis addresses suicide and addiction in the construction industry, and emphasizes the need for psychologically safe workplaces and mental health support.

Ed DeAngelis, CEO of EDA Contractors, shared his thoughts with PHL17 during Suicide Prevention Month.

In a special segment with PHL17’s Morning Extra, hosted by Jason Lee, DeAngelis shared insights on the staggering rate of suicide and addiction in the construction industry, along with ways it can support its workforce by embracing emotional intelligence, mental health advocacy, and creating psychologically safe workspaces.

Currently, suicide rates among male construction workers are 75 percent higher than males in the general population, with construction workers six times more likely to die by suicide than by construction work-related injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and industry findings.

EDA Contractors upholds that when employees feel psychologically safe, they are more likely to foster trust, camaraderie, and collaboration. This in turn allows individuals to feel more comfortable reaching out for support when they need it. Psychological safety is a fundamental aspect of creating a safe, healthy, and thriving work environment. In bringing this message to PHL17, EDA’s DeAngelis championed the call for construction industry leaders to focus not only on physical safety but also on psychological safety. This will create healthier, safer, and more productive workplaces.
